The California Conservatory Series showcases and commissions new music each year as a 21st century version of the French Conservatory Contest Pieces tradition. Each piece will be approximately 7-9 minutes for flute with accompaniment, and will address many components of modern compositional innovations, including but not limited to extended techniques, improvisation, click track, sound design and more! The pieces are not only intended to reach a diverse range of students and performers, but also to encourage all flutists to fearlessly embrace the potential of being a modern flutist.

Cobalt Blue, a new Concerto for Flute (with Piccolo) and Wind Symphony, is written for Dr. Jenni Olson and the California Conservatory series and celebrates and explores some pretty iconic and unique things about Long Beach. From the cobalt blue pyramid on the CSULB campus to the Grand Prix races, the beach, and the Queen Mary (including her original Typhoon Horn pitched at A1!), this work takes us on a journey through our fascinating city and tells their stories through the flute, but also the colors and texture of the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Orchestra. Dr Olson will play the world premiere of Cobalt Blue with the CSULB Wind Symphony on March 8, 2025.

Theory of F-L-U-Tion is the California Conservatory Series piece for Fall 2024. It is for flute, piano, and electronics and is played with a click track. The piece utilizes the full range of the instrument and incorporates mixed meter, extended technique effects, and an optional improvisational section. It is a great study for articulation, phrasing, and meter changes. The electronics give the piece an added layer, and it ends with a bang.
Piccaresque! was written for the California Conservatory Series in Fall 2024. This piece is great for an accomplished flute player who is not as comfortable on the piccolo. It involves mixed meters and stays in a pleasant range on the piccolo. It has a light and technical section that is contrasted with a lovely lyrical section. The intro material returns, and it ends with a flourish.
